Father Owen's Homilies
Homily for the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time which is June 23, 2002 It seems that God wants to say something to us about how foolish it is to fear. There is a positive side to fear because it can help us save our lives in the right circumstances. But fear is a great paralyzer. Fear can keep us from living a full life. Recently I was with a group of friends who were riding around Nemaha County. A young man was with us. He was on a motorcycle and rode ahead of us sometimes on one wheel, sometimes on two up the dirt roads and back again. I envied that young man. I envy people who have the courage to ride motorcycles, to head out across country, perhaps with a companion, taking the blue highways in a daring, fearless but not imprudent fashion. Once I had a motorbike and later what was called a Doodlebug. They were great fun. Lots of times I wish I had the daring and courage of youth back. Perhaps fear has crept into my life. You may be thinking, “How foolish!” Perhaps! But I feel that the greatest foolishness is to forget the words of this Gospel, “Do not be afraid. Not a sparrow falls to the ground without my father’s knowledge. You are worth more than many sparrows. Even the hairs on your head are numbered.” God’s love for you and me is just that intimate.
